Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.
