A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
