Washington Commanders leader Coach Quinn has stated he bears some the fault for a major injury to the team’s quarterback, Jayden Daniels.
Details of the Injury and Situation
Jayden Daniels, who enjoyed among the best first-year performances in history the previous year, suffered a displaced left elbow in the Sunday loss to the Seahawks. Even though Daniels passes with his right arm, the issue has placed his season in doubt. The injury was serious enough that the television broadcast did not show replays and several athletes looked away as he was attended to by medical staff.
Backlash and Leader’s Response
Coach Quinn came under scrutiny as many believed the rookie should not have been on the field in the first place. The injury happened in the final period with the Washington trailing 38-7, rendering a recovery unlikely. It is typical in such situations for teams to insert their reserve QB to avoid harm to their starter.
“I understand. I’ve been reflecting about it constantly, too, and, wow, I missed it,” he said of his decision to leave Daniels in the game. “This is 100% on me.”
Aftermath and Team Prospects
Mariota will be the Commanders’ starting quarterback going forward, but he will lead a team in turmoil. After making the NFC championship game the prior year thanks to Daniels’s excellence, the team have struggled this season. They also lost cornerback Lattimore (ACL tear) and wide receiver Luke McCaffrey (collarbone fracture) on Sunday, and have a number of other starters on injured reserve. The Washington squad are three wins and six losses so far, and it would require a huge turnaround for the club to make the postseason.
